The reputation of Italian wine rests on wines famous throughout the world, such as Chianti, Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, as well as the more "common" Sangiovese, but Sagrantino of Montefalco can surely hold its own in any confrontation.
Franciscan friars brought Sagrantino wine grape back from Minor Asia. Sagrantino took over from the Sangiovese grape in the vineyards.We owe it to this rare and precious grape cultivated only on the hills around Montefalco, that Sagrantino of Montefalco can take its place on the Mount Olympus of Italian wines.

We will pick you up from your accommodation in Florence by 6,45am. Our driver will normally be at your address by 6,40 am. We will then drive to the first winery which will
take approximately 2 hour and 05 minutes.

Assisi
Birthplace of the latin poet Propetius, San Francesco, Santa Clara and San Gabriel.
Assisi was founded by the Umbris in the 1000 BC, later by Etruscans in 450 BC and by Romans in 295 BC.
The Roman name was Asisium.
Roman remains can still be found inside the city walls.
In 238 Asisium was converted to christianity.
Ostrogoths destroyed most of the town in 545 AC.

First winery
Immersed in the green heart of Italy, this winery is a jewel of tradition and innovation. Here, we bring to life wines that celebrate the land from which they originate.
The wine estate was established by selecting and acquiring some of the best vineyards that once belonged to an important winemaking family in Montefalco. These vineyards feature different cultivars, including Sagrantino, Sangiovese, Grechetto, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Trebbiano Spoletino grapes, growing on the gentle slopes of the circumscribed territory of Montefalco.
The uniqueness of the territory and its terroir, combined with environmentally respectful cultivation practices and rigorous hand harvesting, contribute to the company’s goal of achieving exceptional grape quality and, consequently, outstanding wines.
Respect for nature begins with tending the vines according to rigorous organic viticulture principles. This commitment extends through vinification and refinement in the cellar, all the way to packaging. Their approach to winemaking, combined with the application of state-of-the-art technologies, ensures the quality, longevity, and naturalness of the produced wines, enhancing their individual characteristics.
The winery stands as a temple to oenology, where the passion for wine blends with innovation and tradition. The structure, on two-levels structure house, contains the beating heart of our wine production.
The basement is the sanctuary of wine, where the magic of fermentation comes to life. Here, in the barrique, oak barrels rest as guardians of time and the evolution of our wines. Next to them, the fruttaio welcomes the selected grapes for drying a process that concentrates flavors and aromas, resulting in wines of extraordinary intensity.
On the ground floor, sixty-two stainless steel tanks stand as modern sentries, equipped with an advanced temperature control system that guarantees the perfect maturation of each variety. It is here that science meets tradition, and every detail is calibrated to enhance the qualities of grapes.
Second Winery
Over the last 135 years, generations of winemakers have poured energy and passion into this land, leaving a lasting mark on the territory. Montefalco and Sagrantino have become part of the DNA of Scacciadiavoli and the Pambuffetti family. This legacy began with Amilcare Pambuffetti and is now being carried on by the family’s fourth generation.
Founded in 1884, the Scacciadiavoli winery (from scacciare – to banish, and diavoli – devils) takes its name from an exorcist who lived in a town on the borders of the property and used the wine for his rituals. It was conceived by Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi as a wine “industry” an imposing oenological complex, highly advanced for its time. In 1954, at the age of 71, Amilcare Pambuffetti bought the Scacciadiavoli estate, where he had worked as a farmhand at 14. Upon his death in 1977, his sons Alfio, Settimio and Mario continued the activities that had begun with their father. In the year 2000, the Pambuffetti brothers Francesco, Carlo, and Amilcare, the children of Settimio decided to take the winery into their own hands, honoring an ancient tradition and preserving the oldest winery of its kind in the area.
Although the winery never stopped its production since 1884, the year 2000 marked the beginning of extensive renovations undertaken without altering the original building. These renovations preserved all the historical architectural structures while introducing new technologies and modern machinery. The winery is situated on a hill, featuring a vertical building with four levels, one of which one is below ground, and all the production takes place by gravity-flow.
As it stands, the property covers 130 hectares, of which 40 hectares are dedicated to grapevines. Current annual production is of around 250,000 bottles. The vines, situated at an average altitude of 400 meters above sea level, grow in sandy-clay soil of medium depth, which is highly suited for quality viticulture, particularly for late-ripening varieties such as Sagrantino. The vineyards occupy various hillsides in the municipalities of Montefalco, Gualdo Cattaneo and Giano dell’Umbria.
